Shopping in Bloomfield center . Might as well shop in Downtown Newark or Irvington. Nowadays, it's pretty much a bunch of run down dollar stores and junk shops. I do, however remember the old days when it was a great place to shop. There were quality stores such as Lipton's department store, Janet Shop for the older ladies and many small family owned jewelry stores and the like. I'll never forget stopping at Woolworth's with my mom at the end of a shopping trip to get a banana split at the luncheonette counter.
The center has great potential. There are plans to re-develop the area. That should have been done years ago.
I rented in Bloomfield for 6 years and recently bought a house in the south side - yes I said the south side of Bloomfield in Halycon Park to be exact and its such a wonderful area my children are always playing outside. Its quiet and it feels like a community in that area rather than just another house on the block.
Grew up in Bloomfield and the area on the south side and town has changed. It still appears nice and the people who are living there seem to keep up the neighborhoods. It used to be primarily an Italian town now it is more Latino/Portugese. My mom still lives in town, on the North end by Brookdale school and I wouldn't hesitate to live in her neighborhood.
Hello I was just curious to see what people were saying about Bloomfield, NJ. I moved to Bloomfield approximately 1 year and 3 months ago from Manhattan. I did my research, like everyone else, before purchasing a home in Bloomfield and had my eyes wide open. Bloomfield is large geographically and the areas are so varied. Saying Bloomfield is awful is like saying Manhattan is awful because it has "rough" areas. Numerous affluent NJ towns are bordered by undesirable towns.
Bloomfield is more affordable than surrounding areas. You have to do your research and look at a ton of houses. I looked at 36 houses in Bloomfield and they all varied in location. Location is everyone of course. It's very easy commute to Manhattan. You DON'T shop is Bloomfield or hang out- you go 5 minutes to major shopping and cultural haunts all over the place. There are some places in Bloomfield too- I prefer to shop and eat in Montclair, etc. ALTHOUGH Bloomfield has the BEST dinner State Grill on Bloomfield Ave. I am from Manhattan and say this dinner rocks!! It's amazing and pride of Bloomfield. Yeah Bloomfield. That being said, we are a young couple, no kids, artistic and work in Manhattan- so Bloomfield suites our needs- maybe not everyone's.
Sorry for the typos- just really enthusiastic about Bloomfield. It's great and has such potential to become wonderful
I would suggest owning a car though to get around and visit the cute surrounding areas and shopping
Oh and I own a sports car and SUV and "ain't" nobody been stealing my cars. AND only one has an alarm. It's been 1.3 years no problem
