Havemeyer's Deli was opened by George and Alma Havemeyer on Central Ave in Jersey City... later it was run by their son George and his wife Vera. Everything was made on premises from the Rice Pudding and Bread Puddings to the Fish Cakes on Fridays. The crumb cake and other bakery items were brought in on a daily basis from Shoning's Bakery in Jersey City... how do I know this? George and Alma were my Oma and Opa!
I was thinking about this thread not too long ago when I found out that my favorite German resturant "Fritzy's" in Howell closed in late 2010. I had heard that the owner wanted to retire which would make sense being the place was always crowded. I'm just a little suprised no one bought the business. Although in this economy not many people want to take a risk. Now I need to find another authentic German food resturant!.....
Anyone remember Grand Distributors, Consumers, Arthurs and Service merchandise? I read someone posted restaruants.. anyone remember Bonanza and Ponderosa? I know if you are out of NJ they are alive and well lol but not here.

While I'm not quite sure why anyone would miss them if they disappeared, in reality, Acme Supermarkets still exist.
Here are a few of their locations in NJ if you really feel the need to visit one:

One (Millville) of the two by me just went out of business, but the other one (Vineland) is alive in well. While at school in Newark, I go to the one in Clifton once in a while.
