It's not a good place for retirees for several reasons. Main reason
being the quality of medical care. Someone correct me if I am
wrong but last time I heard they had five doctors in the town?
This is for a town of about 7,000. They have a brand new
hospital but for a long time didn't have a radiologist. Many many
people, for anything serious, are sent to Albuquerque for medical
care. This in itself should make one think long and hard about
retiring there. Last I heard none of the doctors would take new
patients.
Before you move - check into things such as property taxes. Compare
them to where you live now. Visit there and see if you could live there,
some could and some couldn't. The supermarket is of very poor
quality merchandise and high prices - most Ratonians travel over
the pass to go to Wal-Mart in Trinidad. Also be aware they are building
a racetrack/casino in the town, for some this is a turnoff.
Schools are of poor quality, this is one of the reasons we left.
The past few years only the k through 2nd graders have passed
the testing requirements...the high school and middle school have
failed miserably on it for years.
The cost of living there is expensive. Check that out. It is at
least 100 miles to an airport or any major shopping. Also there
are no major industries for jobs.
There are many good things about Raton but one needs to be aware
of the good AND the bad.
Am seriously considering purchasing the "Raton Pass Inn" in Raton, NM. Currently reside in Minnesota. Any info appreciated. Is the Racino a sure thing to happen? Any other info on Raton? Thanks in advance.
Am not sure, that area of the state could certainly use the jobs. I have a friend who lives in Tucumcari and they are kind of politicking for a racetrack/casino too.
I lived in both of these towns in the early 80's working on a pipeline project, and really liked both towns. Sadly, there is not a lot of jobs in Raton. Weather wise, it can snow pretty good in the winter (being from Minnesota I'm sure THAT is not a big deal to you), but the summers are great! Hopefully, one of the locals can weigh in here. I was through there and spent the night in Raton just last week. Good luck!
The racino is being built south of town, just east of the old
track, from what I understand. They were granted the racing
and gambling licenses. The owners of the racino assured the
state that they will open in May for live racing.
PS Tell Jan that Molly in Missouri said hi! I am friends with
her cousin. Lived in Raton for 14 years until 2004, before
that I lived in Trinidad. Any questions just ask! Here is a link
to their newspaper, fyi:

I live close to the Raton Pass Inn, my family stays there when they visit. It is very nice. The race track is not looking too good right now. Lots of things were supposed to have happened but has not yet.

Dream, dream, dream. It will not happen. Not unlike the one proposed and approved West of Amarillo, Texes.
Are there any Barbershops in Raton? Raton sounds like the place for me! I'm tired of living in this "hotbox" they call AZ.
