Seeing a need for self-storage in Los Lunas, U-Haul has announced plans for a new facility.

The Phoenix-based moving equipment and storage rental company will break ground in the spring on a three-story, 90,000-square-foot facility in Los Lunas. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2023, according to a news release.

"Our closest full-service store to Los Lunas is 26 miles away in Albuquerque," said Tom Neill, the president of U-Haul Co. of northern New Mexico, in a statement. "Opening a convenient self-move facility with clean, spacious storage options is important to meet customer demand. There is insufficient high-quality storage in Los Lunas and we will change that with a building that will make the city and local residents proud."

Los Lunas has certainly had more going on than Rio Rancho lately in terms of big projects. That may change once the Intel expansion gets going in Rio Rancho, but Los Lunas has certainly been the suburb to watch in Albuquerque the past few years! I'm surprised Amazon hasn't built anything in Rio Rancho yet.

Big corporations moving in will ruin these small communities.
Trump won Valencia County 53% - 47%, so not really a huge margin, but significant. The county is definitely red, but still plenty of blue around.

Los Lunas has kind of a two community feel. The old farming community, mostly along the Rio Grande, and the newer ABQ subdivision community near I-25. Almost all of the growth and change is of course happening in the suburban part of LL, as evidenced by the construction articles linked above.

There are many houses being built now, and evidence of many more to come. Los Lunas lacks any significant charm as a town ( it does have some rural/ old New Mexico charm in the older parts), and already has some traffic issues due to the inefficient road structure that was originally built to suit a small agricultural community.

IMO, if LL is to prosper it is going to need to address its infrastructure situation. Otherwise the coming growth will make the town very difficult to get around and will ultimately hinder long term growth. There are some people in the town that do not want any change, and have fought plans to change now to accommodate future growth. But growth is coming regardless. The new interchange planned for I-25 will be an improvement, but its long timeline and only partially funded status may not come soon enough.

It does sound like Valencia County may finally get a hospital, but again that has been discussed and funded for over a decade, with no progress to date.

LL does have a lot of positives. Scenic setting, good support for schools ( relatively speaking - this is New Mexico

Finally we have official confirmation of the Amazon facility in Los Lunas. Amazon and the local government announced yesterday that the 1.5 million sq ft facility will be a fulfillment center that will create more than 600 jobs when it opens sometime next year. Below is the Albuquerque Journal's coverage with current pics of the facility construction.

Amazon is doubling down on its New Mexico presence.

The e-commerce giant announced early Wednesday that it’s planning a massive fulfillment center of more than 1 million square feet in Los Lunas. The company said the center is expected to create more than 600 full-time jobs.

The facility is slated to open sometime in 2023, the release said. Construction is already underway on a site west of the Facebook Data Center on the northwest side of the village, according to Bob Feinberg, senior vice president/principal at Colliers International Albuquerque, who with his business partner Tom Jones brokered the deal.

Workers at the facility will “pick, pack and ship” items for delivery.

“This Amazon facility is a significant economic development opportunity for the Village of Los Lunas,” Los Lunas Mayor Charles Griego said in the release. “Their investment into the community during the post-pandemic climate will be transformative, generating over 600 full-time jobs and a total economic impact of $300 million. Our ability to create more employment opportunities for our local families could not have come at a better time and we are beyond excited to have Amazon become another great community partner.”

...“Los Lunas has a great workforce and we are excited to add to the amazing team currently helping us set a higher standard of operational excellence and delivering outstanding customer experience every day,” said Amazon Manager of Economic Development Manager Sam Bailey in the release.

The announcement comes a little less than two years after Amazon broke ground on its first New Mexico fulfillment center on Albuquerque’s West Side. That center currently employs about 3,500 part-time and full-time employees, the company said.

Stopped for gas at LL the other day. What a nightmare that was.

Better build newer bigger roads so more people can come and then build bigger roads so more people can come then....

Another big jobs and economic development announcement for Los Lunas today. The governor announced a new $2 billion manufacturing facility that will bring over 950 jobs to the area, with an average salary of $68,000 per year. The facility will be entirely powered by renewable energy and will recycle used aluminum cans into aluminum sheet rolls for new cans. It is being funded by a capital investment group from Louisville and the Ball Corporation will supply the operation and have a minority stake. The facility will have the capacity to recycle and manufacture up to 1.3 billion pounds of aluminum annually.

Los Lunas is really turning into a major economic development hub for metro Albuquerque!

Below is the announcement made on the Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance website this morning.

SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Thursday that a capital investment group has committed to creating over 950 jobs and investing more than $2 billion in the construction of an aluminum can sheet rolling mill and recycling center in Valencia County, New Mexico.

The group has signed a letter of intent to purchase a 1,300-acre parcel in Los Lunas with construction set to start by late 2023 and manufacturing in 2026. The facility would be powered with 100% renewable energy from PNM and have the capacity to manufacture up to 1.3 billion pounds of aluminum annually, with plans to ensure 85% recycled content after the mill is fully operational.

“The partnerships we have built to create and grow a renewable energy economy in New Mexico is appealing to businesses as they look for friendly locations to expand,” Gov. Lujan Grisham said. “Aluminum that is produced with a low-carbon footprint is in demand as customers continue to push for sustainability, and this innovative new project in Valencia County positions New Mexico to benefit from this industry.”

Louisville-based Manna Capital Partners, a private investment firm whose founding partners are Ulysses L. “Junior” Bridgeman and Kevin R. Attkisson, will lead the project and construct and operate the mill. Ball Corporation, a leading global provider of infinitely recyclable beverage packaging, will enter into a long-term supply agreement and also intends to take a minority equity position.

Manna chose New Mexico in part because of its competitive business climate, proximity to a transportation network including rail service, the growth in can-making facilities across the Southwestern United States, and Gov. Lujan Grisham’s commitment to sustainable energy. The governor has specifically targeted sustainable manufacturing for additional state investment in order to diversify New Mexico’s economy and create higher-paying jobs.

The State of New Mexico is pledging $5 million from its Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) job-creation fund to support the project with assistance paid out as the manufacturer reaches economic development benchmarks, to be determined in a Project Participation Agreement.

The jobs will pay an average of $68,000 a year and the project is expected to have an economic impact of $3.4 billion over 10 years.

“This state investment will not only bring new higher-paying jobs for New Mexicans, but it expands our manufacturing footprint with a sustainable, responsible products that will see increasing demand,” Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Alicia J. Keyes said.

“The Economic Development Department and our partners worked together for months to bring this project here. We competed against 10 other sites and now these jobs are coming to New Mexico. True collaborative efforts like this one result in great successes for our state.”

The Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance (AREA) received the initial inquiry from the firm, and subsequently played a critical role in the site selection process and provided key assistance to the investors.

Grisham is not fooling me. I will personally influence as many as I can this election cycle to ensure that she is not only defeated, but crushed. Ranked the worst governor in the country by the annual Lafer-ALEC poll.

She must be defeated, massively.
