Interesting isn't it? try spending a week there when we left TorC we were completely relaxed, body, mind and soul. True it does mess with your head , rarely do we see that kind of solitude after 7pm...of course being over 50yrs old and in a town that shuts down early is fine for us. No industry.. no rush hour....like someone else said, there is plenty of info in other posts...all we can say is we liked it..

Default Truth or Consequences

We are beginning to think of moving to NM when we retire in a few years. I would like to have some opinion of the area of Truth or Consequences from some who are familiar with it. We are looking for a place that we could live economically (decent property available for under $100,000), and safely in a area that doesn't get hot and humid in the summer and doesn't get too cold in the winter or recieve alot of snow. We also would be most happy in a smaller population area. Any other comments that you could make on this area or others you could recommend would be appreciated.

We are tired of Texas politics, etc. wind, humidity, you name it -- is TorC our answer? We are retired and looking for our "last" home, doctors and hospitals available, friendly people, older ones, that is.

It's been a few years since I was there. I spent a lot of time there in the 90's and before as my parents lived there.

It is a small town with a downtown area and some things spread out along the main streets. The Rio Grande river goes through part of the town. There's lakes close by.

It has a hospital and just a few doctors I believe. It was a peaceful kind of place back then. I was thinking about going out there again to see what it's like now.

It has gained a little population but not much. There is a lot of older people there. It seems there are some snowbirds from the northern states too.

I'd consider giving it a look and see if it meets your needs. Me I like a small town.

Now I have seen where some folks say there has been a certain amount of crime there. I never saw anything like that when I was there. I'd look at the stats and see exactly what these crimes are and if it would have any effect on an ordinary peaceful retired person. After all no place is quite heaven.

I have lived in T or C for a little more than 3 years and like any small or large
town it has it's positives and negatives. I would think it would depend on your background, education level and age how well you might like it here.
Medical like most small towns is not all that good especially compared to
larger cities like Albuquerque or Phoenix. People here seem to spend a lot of
time in their autos driving to Las Cruces to see specialists. With gas at $2.99
per gallon here that could be a factor for many. Also if you have worked in
a professional setting all your life you might find T or C a little more blue
collar than you like but maybe not. It does have a large amount of older retired people which most seem to have lived in small towns or on farms
most of their lives. The politics here seem very backwards and the city fathers seem to have a very non-progressive attitude about change in the town. It does not snow very much in the winter and is hotter than I like in
the summer but being dry it is not as bad as Phoenix. Housing is much lower
here than many places but it seems to be climbing but I would think you could
find a smaller house for under $100,000 without to much trouble. Of course
there are usually solid reasons for housing to be cheaper in some areas than
others. I do think T or C is up for change especailly with the new Walmart
under construction and possibly more to come.

Smile TorC Bound! HELP!

I will be moving to TorC shortly after 10/01/07. I have been reading the posts both +/- for months and find them helpful and entertaining! You folks crack me up! I now live in Cleveland.

Wanna see a REAL crime rate? check out the stats for zip 44102! my current neighborhood. But I love it---the best food and most interesting apt's and people in the city. My neighbors range from a former Senator to homeless drug addicts. Our little NYC. But I'll take enriching and interesting over safe and bland anyday So no need to let me know how 'dangerous' TorC is. Thanks anyway.

And the NM being a foreign country posts are too funny in a tragically ignorant sort of way. I am originally from southern CA and when we would make our inevitable trip to visit folks in Cleveland every summer in the 70's, someone at some gathering could be counted on to interject that they always thought that Southern California was a different state than California. Puhleeeeze!!! Lordy...now I have to deal with NM being a foreign country.

Appreciation for your lively posts aside...I have some questions. I am a personal trainer and was wondering what the chances of generating some work would be? I have plans to come back to Cleveland every quarter to work and will make enough to live on from my contracts here, but I don't want to sit around with nothing to do 8 months out of the year. Obviously, I can't commit to FT employment, but I do like to be busy.

Any ideas appreciated! Volunteering opportunities, etc. I've also considered opening a small healthy foods shop...a way scaled down 'Trader Joe's' type? Any already there?

Also, what is the Church scene like? I'm a bit metaphysical in my beliefs...'The Secret' was no secret at my current church. Kind of how I'm winding up in TorC, actually.

And another thing! What is the best way to secure a small 1bdrm or studio apt before I arrive? Is there a motel or B&B available if I don't find one? I know the Herald is online, but I'm not sure who to avoid renting from. When I ship my belongings, I want them going somewhere other than storage! I know I'll probably have to make a quick trip in August to get things in order.

Thanks so much!
Marie

Marie....Tor C ia about 5,000 population so not alot of emplyment but as far as being a personal trainer i'd think the late fall /winter/early spring as the town swells with Sunbirds and maybe you could offer your services to them as i'm sure alot of them may need guidance on working out.....

I think T or C and elephant butte is closer to 7000 population but maybe it's
more by now. It seems like the new health food store is making it but time
will tell. I find most of the people here like the unhealthy type of food.
Remember this is a cowboy state and even thought it's not another country,
many here still think of it as somewhat 3rd world. Think red meat. I hear
that a lot and even though I am not a vegetarian I try to come close to it.
I find it difficult to do in a small "Think red meat town". I guess it all depends
on where you are coming from and what you are used to. I wouldn't hold
my breath on Trader Joes opening up in T or C real soon. It would happen
in LC before they even realize there is a T or C on the map. I guess I see
the local population divided into two camps even though there are many more
segments of the population. First are the Christian right that have most of the buying power in this community and then the people that life might not
have turned out quite the way they hoped for. Then there are the cowboys
but I just expect them because this is afterall the wild west. The people who live here but have fallen on hard times are the ones that have little money to spend so if you are planning on opening a business it might be wise
to do a thourough study of the real demographics for the T or C area. Many
have come and gone and moved on the greener pastures. Also there seem
to be more dreamers here than anyplace I have lived in before as well. I guess dreams are good and they usually cost little until acted upon.
