HAH! For me that's an easy one! It's the nearest place where I can shop at both a Lowe's and Home Depot for building supplies and garden stuff.

The real "beauty" of living in Alamo is only appreciated by those with an interest in being outdoors and seeing all sorts of unusual sights and doing those things outdoors types like to do. To really enjoy the area fully, a good 4WD or All Wheel Drive vehicle is best, but not necessary. But getting out and about does mean driving some distance, with all that implies for fuel usage.

The friends that i have made, many from this board.
The White sands to take visitors to.
If you want snow, its 1/2 hr away in the winter, and if you want it cooler in the summer its 1/2 hr away. So much to do if you are into hiking, ATV's, different things for different people.

And there is the 3rd annual CD picnic in Timberon in July, so plan on coming. This is for people that we have all met here and now love getting together.
I will post more info closer to the date.

Just want to add that if Alamo keeps growing maybe there will one day be a Costco store there too! That would make a weekly trip mandatory for me!

Lots of sunshine as it's over 300 days a year that the sun shines all day.

Also your only 10 minutes to the mountain pine trees up in High Rolls/Mountain Park, 20 minutes from Cloudcroft (9000 ft) and 40 minutes from Ruidoso (7000 ft) mountain communities residing in the 100 mile long/40 mile wide Sacramento mountain range in Southern New Mexico with tons of campgrounds, hiking/biking trails, mountain streams and lakes galore .

You are spot on! I can smell the pines & hear the wind through them just thinking about it. I am planning my vacation for the 4th of July so I can go to Timberon. Wish I had my house sold here so I could make it a permanent vacation...

You guys were right about returning vets. I am one and was stationed at Holloman. I thought I'd make a better living elsewhere when I left - newly married and pregnant. We traveled the US looking for our spot in the sun and faced some of the worse adversities of our lives. I now live in Sterling, Colorado and the FIRST chance I get I am coming HOME TO ALAMOGORDO. I'll be the divorcee with three beautiful children - ages 12, 10, 8 right now. Hey, maybe I'll see you @ Walmart (haha)

Thank you all so much for writing about your favorite things in Alamogordo. My husband is retiring from the Navy and for years we have tried as we might to find a better spot to spend the rest of our days (there just doesn't seem to be one). We are out doorsy type people so we will just fit right in. Your schools and low crime are so very appealing that it was hard for us to choose another area in the southwest. Our older kids are excited to start school and stay put.

56 more days!!!

Have you ever attended the annual car shows in Ruidoso? The large one is held in the fall on the grounds of the race track. Another is held in Ruidoso on a parking lot of Mountain Annie's dinner theater.
