Hi so I’m new to this process. I’m currently going through it now and I was told that my file is with the agency and waiting for approval and that usually takes 5-10days and then after that I can view the apartment & during that time my file will be sent to hpd for final approval. Is this normally how the HC process works?

That is not an abnormal process. Agencies handle things differently. Some have you come view units before the full approval and before your file is sent to HPD, others wait to even show you units until you've been approved by HPD.

Does anyone know if you can turn down an apartment after the file has been approved by HPD? Worried that won't like the apartment after I actually see it in person..

100% you can turn it down. The only time you become obligated is when you sign the lease.

Absolutely you can, this is not uncommon at all. That's why you hear of people being called for buildings with numbers in the many 1000s when there are only have a few dozen apartments of fewer. People get denied or drop out for a whole host of reasons all along the process. As Marsha said, the only time you are obligated is once you've signed a lease as that is a contract like any other.

thanks for quick replies, this wouldn't affect your future files with other buildings when they get sent to HPD either right?

Not at all. Each lottery on HC is independent, even those handled by the same agency. Every time you apply and are contacted, they have to fully assess your situation and determine if you qualify even if you have been rejected or declined before.

On average, how long does it take to get HPD approval? I've been waiting for over 2 weeks and Housing Connect still says it's Under Review.

Mine took 10 days, I’m now waiting for my lease signing. I just want to move already.
