My 19-year-old nephew from Europe is visiting me over Christmas and New Year’s. He’s a cool dude and experienced big-city kid, but I’m twice as old and don’t typically mingle with teenagers/young adults his age, so I’m wondering if anyone has any insider tips on where to take him and what to show him.

I will do the obvious touristy stuff with him, but considering that I’ve only lived here for a year myself, I’m hoping for some pointers beyond the usual “Frommer’s New York in 10 Days” recommendations, particularly from those who are closer to his age. He’s a completely regular kid and up for anything.

Any and all ideas are appreciated, including life music venues that would not be off-limits to him due to being underage.

Ideally, I would also like to hear about a few bars that he could get in and that are more inclusive when it comes to age, so that neither he nor I are out of place and can both have some fun. Manhattan preferred.

Thanks!

The Blue Note Jazz Club (Blue Note Jazz Club New York) is a possibility.

Bars will be iffy becuse drinking age here is 21. He can find some that will serve him, of course, but caveat emptor--that could end up trouble. Othewise, pick up the Village Volice or Time Out NY to scout out things for him to do. And if the guy wants to visit youngish neighborhoods just on his own, start him off in the East Village, a college -paradise, or parts of Willamsburgh.

What does your nephew like to do?

How about bowling?

Thanks for the leads, folks! Turns out he was extremely easy to please and actually wanted to spend time with his uncle more than anything, so we did the tourist things, ate out a lot, and watched indie movies. We did flee Times Square tonight, but otherwise had a great time. He's leaving tomorrow afternoon.
