I wanted to teach and follow in the footsteps of my mother and grandmother but after watching the profession devalued over time, I took another path. I still involve myself in independent educational activities because I want kids to learn.
Very sad about the kids. They really deserve better
Talk to parents, teachers, administrators, students, etc. and you'll hear a different story from each.
Historically I would imagine this is the worst time ever to be starting a teaching career in NYC.
$45K for that kind of job which no longer has the amazing retirement benefits or ANY job security is the pits.
You'll now start to see people taking many jobs in teaching just because it is something they want to do for a while, which will result in transience among the profession, and likely worse results amongst the kids.
That may never be apparent in graduation rates, or what the mayor says about education- but it severely shows in college preparation reports.
The UFT might as well give its members their money back- nothing is doing with them.
I disagree. This is certainly not the worst time to start teaching in NYC. Salaries for NYC teachers increased 43% since 2002. Teachers also receive good medical and retirement benefits (Teachers' Retirement System and the optional Tax-Deferred Annuity Program). Teach NYC - New York City Department of Education

Then why do you think 50% of the teachers don't last 2 years ?
You only get retirement if you make it to 20 or 25 years. The overwhelming majority no longer do.

Was 5 years to vest.
Now 10 years.
Will become 11 or 12 years with this Tier 6.
That's just to see SOMETHING from your retirement.
If you leave before that, you'll have lost anything put in at that time.
Again- this was at one point a lifelong career path- and now few will make it that. Rather a giant push to fill vacancies, remove them after 3-5 years and repeat.
Teaching has beome a labor of love the past 20 years. These people were grossly under paid for years, & they have to deal with some real ****ty pupils.
Back in my time as a student you listened & respected a teacher. Now the kids & the parents are disrespectful to the teachers. It's a losing battle.
I have a cousin who changed her major from Advertising to teaching last year. Several of is tried to talk her out of it, she is pursuing it. Today she told me that the kids she student teaches told her flat out they don't have to listen to her & aren't afraid of her.
I'm terrified for her.
