I attended a presentation by the NYC Dept of City Planning where they mentioned that 1/3 of blacks in NYC are foreign-born and that includes Caribbeans and West Africans, among others. Presumably there's another group of American-born people with immigrant parents. Hard to say exactly what the answer to your question is but the percentage is high and it's growing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are included in that number. Even up here, we get our share of Sudanese and other east African refugees. Same with those from the Caribbean. For instance, you may know that Schenectady has a pretty big Guyanese community: http://guyamerica.org/
All Africans are included in that number with West Africans being the most. I'll see if I can get some more numbers from their website.
The population of foriegn blacks is always estimated in official data as they gte submerged within the AA category....unless they also include nation of birth. Most people who live in East Flatbush are Caribbean origin, but official stats wouldnt show this.
I'd say probably half have at least one parent from the West Indies or Africa. I meet a lot of West Indian-African hybrids here. I remember the New York Times a few years back saying that 1 out every 2 blacks in NYC are of West Indian or African descent.

That number is correct. Indeed if one includes people with Caribbean origin grandparents and beyond it goes even higher.....though that makes little sense as in most instances real ties to a Caribbean identity will not be significant.
I am in my 40s.
Two of my grandparents were born in the Northeast - Grandma - NY (1915) & Grandpa - NJ (1906).
My other two grandparents were born in VA.
My mom was born in Queens (1934)
None of my family members were born outside the US.
I've been told that I am very rare among black New Yorkers.
Location: Vinings/Cumberland in the evil county of Cobb

All blacks in NYC and worldwide are of African descent...we have been effectively divided and conquered
