Yep, the only people who really don't call Manhattan "the city" have moved to the city over the past 10-15 years. If transplants want to sound like real NYers, they should adopt the practice of calling Manhattan "the city"
Only the recent transplants don't get it. Manhattan is the city, all other boros are mentioned by name. It's been this way forever.
Major league wrong! It's only been this way since January 1, 1898 when the five borough city was created. Prior to that, New York City was contained on Manhattan Island--and "the city" as a reference to Manhattan is a holdover from the days prior to 1898.
See...all it takes is a good history book. (People still read books occasionally these days, don't they?)
It's common in other areas, to assign one city as "the city", even if you live in another city in the area. People from Oakland or Berkeley call SF "the city", for example.
Correct me if I am wrong but despite the political boundaries, the classical definition of a city is a concentrated area that facilitates the interaction of people and business.
By political boundaries, technically all of the 5 boroughs are a city but by classical definition, Manhattan is a city.
ive heard that people from jersey and even as far as philly refer to manhattan as the city also. im used to my philly people saying nyc in general since their mostly in brooklyn.
