Back in the day how did you turn on the Brights lights in the car
You pressed a button on the floor with your foot.

And Brodie knobs?

I remember the conductors straddled between the cars and leaning out to check the platform in the Fifties, but it lasted at least into the Sixties.

My god! Have they abandoned those names! Next they'll be turning the Statue of Liberty into condos.

As for subway tokens they were still be used not that long ago. So I would think most adults remember having seen them at least when they were a child.
Good grief, I remember seeing them as an adult! I feel like Fred Flintstone.

This is a bit late (in my case, at least) for nostalgia, but does anyone now remember Alison Steele?

lol...some youngsters here! I certainly remember tokens, paper transfers on buses (with those noisy coin machines), not having any kind of cable tv (roof antenna baby!), no cellphones/beepers/affordable computers..etc.

Growing up in the Bronx and getting awful shoes from Fayva and Buster Browns as a kid (thanks mom!) and going to big chain stores like Woolworths, Alexanders and later Caldors among others. I remember when my family got their first VCR in the early 80's from ....yes.. Crazy Eddie (where the prices were INNNSAAANE!).

Alison Steele, the Night Bird, the only NYC woman DJ that I knew of at the time. She and the old WNEW FM gang have become objects again of public attention after the recent passing of Pete Fornatele.

"The flutter of wings, the sounds of the night, the shadow across the moon,
as the Nightbird lifts her wings and soars above the earth into another level of comprehension,
where we exist only to feel.

Come fly with me, Alison Steele, the Nightbird..."

Woolworth, Alexanders & Caldors still existed in the early 1990s. So again most adults should remember them.

Less to do with how true of a NYer and more to do with how old of a NYer you are
