Something I've been saying for a long time but now The Bronx's murder rate is even lower than Boston which is considered one of the safest cities in the US.
It's considered the safest because most of the violent crime occurs away from where visitors would ever go, or most white suburbanites. Parts of Dorchester, Mattapan, Roxbury have their fair share of violent crime though they aren't as high as compared to say, Philadelphia. A lot of the older areas of the metros aren't contained within the city limits but have much lower violent crime rates than the bad city neighborhoods. Places like Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Everett, and a number of other cities record low murder rates but are often thought of as "Boston" by outsiders.
These days Brownsville and East New York are the worse areas of the city. Bad areas of the Bronx are much better than those two Brooklyn neighborhoods. But then there are cities out there that are worse than Bad areas of Brooklyn.
You repeat the same crap. Mott Haven's murder rate is way higher than East NY. You should say instead that "YOU feel more comfortable in the Bronx than in Brooklyn", because the stats don't agree with you.

East NY is a large neighborhood; with 3-4 times the population, there's likely a section of East NY with as high of a murder rate of Mott Haven. Both Brownsville and Bed-Stuy (81st precinct) had a higher murder rate than Mott Haven last year by a large margin.
The Bronx while poor consists of a different demographic makeup than the cities featured on First 48. It's heavily immigrant and about half Hispanic. The Black population in the Bronx contains large contigents of Africans and people from the Carribbean.
Basically the lower concentrations of American Blacks in the Bronx IMHO leads to a lower murder rate than say Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans etc.

Thank you for speaking the truth, and of course no one can accuse you of being racist. African immigrants are a wonderful addition to our city and our country: I hope immigration laws are reformed to allow more into our country.
Indeed, other than large housing projects, there are very few American Blacks left in the Bronx. I hope our culture does something about the sociological problems that plague the American Black community (community: not individuals). The growth of the black Middle Class is a wonderful thing, but a stubborn counter-cultural, high crime, single-mother dominated Black underclass remains. Just ask Bill Cosby. I hope our president also addresses this issue at the end of his second term, when he has the "freedom' to do so....
I'm just saying, when people talk about the worst of NYC, past and present, it was always the South Bronx, not Brooklyn.
I think it's more that 1) the South Bronx was until recently just that bad and 2) the South Bronx is more uniform in safety (or crime for that matter) than Brooklyn, if that makes any sense. So while East New York and Brownsville are the worst, Brooklyn is patchier safety-wise.
