So my electric bills from Con Ed are a little ridiculous. I have a 2 bedroom (jr4 style) in Briarwood. I am home a lot so the TV is running often. I try to keep the lights off and use natural light. TV is on overnight but there is a sleep timer for an hour or 2. Xbox shuts off after 6 hours.

I got my bill and it's 144 for budget billed. It was 117 previously. Until I moved here I never paid more then 100 dollars in the winter. I called and they said I used 487 kWH which would have been 203 dollars. Insanity. Last month they said I used in the mid 300s and the bill would have been 116.

Is this high amount of usage? I find it insane to use 203 dollars worth of electric when it's winter with no AC. I know the TV being on all times is a bad thing when it comes to electric but that still seems insanity.

Have you used any auxiliary electrical heating? Electric stove? An ancient refrigerator?

But still, I have concluded that Con-Ed charges about $ .29/Kwhr including taxes, fees, delivery etc. but that quote of $203 for 487 Kwhr puts the rate at $ .42/Kwhr...seems impossible and it's likely some clerk doesn't know long division.

The last month quote was more in line with proper billing. $116/350 = $.33/Kwhr.

Thing is you are on "budgeted billing" so you are paying in Winter the excess used for air conditioning in Summer. Not only that but since you UNDERPAID for last year, you will pay the higher amount this year PLUS the difference in last year.

Try this: take last years budgeted x 12 and add up all the monthly ACTUAL amounts and divide to find out how much they charged you per Kwhr.

If you haven't already done so, switch out all your incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescents.
Why leave your TV and X-Box on overnight?

Yes, Con-Ed's UNREGULATED rates are horrific and will only go UP. They have us over a barrel.

It says delivery is 487 @ 11.4086 cents. Supply is 12.2772 cents. These seem crazy high. I did she a heater. I forgot that. The apartment is randomly hot and cold before winter really kicks in.

Still seems crazy high to me. I know that living upstate it's cheaper. I used to have 50-60 dollar bills in the winter compared. But 203 dollars in a month?

FYI we pay the highest rates in the country, and Con Edison is asking for a rate increase. In about 2-3 years I am installing solar panels so I can rely as little as possible on Con Ed and their crazy rates.

skilldeadly,
First order of business is to stop using the heater. Bake a pie in the gas oven instead. Those heaters cost $.44 an hour to run.

It is crazy high and then they add another nickel in taxes.
Figuring $ .29/Kwhr total cost won't be far off.

That means the difference between

New York is unregulated.

I would have thought that the competition would have made rates lower (those other companies that knock on your door), but they are no better!

We were on automatic billing and Con Ed made a big mistake reading the meter and deducted about $700 from our account. They admitted being at fault, but were just like - sorry - oh well. We no longer pay automatically.

And Con-Ed has the lock on Delivery which is about half the bill.

I think budget billing is not a good idea because it is too easy to lose the correlation between what you use and what you pay.

Sigh, just another reason to leave this area and go back upstate. That bill would be about 70 dollars in WNY. If I got a job that would help too. The heater is only used when the heat decides not to kick on when it's cold. It's only for my daughter since she gets cold easily and hasn't mastered the art of the blanket.

My bill is $200 this month. That's a little high for me during this time of year but I refuse to sit at home with a winter jacket on. I've allowed myself the luxury of a space heater while I watch TV at night. It's only fair !

The summers have been outrageous with bills up in the $280 range and I still sweat through most of the day until I have to sleep (with ac on).

NY'ers pay the highest electric bills in the country I believe. Yet another reason you get punished for living here.
