Near Grand Central? Near the Citicorp center? Near the financial district on Park (above Grand Central?) Near Times Square? There isn't much going on in that part of town.

No, not that far West. But that's also a very expensive area in which to rent. Go east a few blocks. Not too far from Citicorp center (one block east) there's a supermarket!
There's TONS going on there. I work and live in this area. Really.
I've started my search more deeply on all those places you guys mentioned before, including midtown with its tiny studios. Speaking of midtown, what is the best area (within WEST and EAST)?
East is nicer, more residential. Midtown West: office buildings, hotels, theaters, few (except for ONE supermarket on West 57th St.) places to get groceries. And there are little parks in midtown East.
Wow, it's incredible to me the difference in salary between my little po-dunk place and NYC. If you make over 100,000 here, you're living in a very large house in a gated community. Sometimes I wonder why so many people from the northeast are coming to the small town South, but now I understand. It's really a trade off, isn't it? I guess in NYC, you pay a lot more, but you get more.

Granted. But when I think Midtown, I think "all the office locations I have ever worked". (I freelanced for about 5 years and in that time, I worked almost exclusively in the midtown area.) So in those areas, and the Rockefeller area too, I never found many ameneties that would accomodate residency. Mosty very expensive takeout places, lots of "Boltons" and handbag stores. A few shoe shine places and cleaners.
I would encourage the OP to explore other areas as well. I did live in Midtown East but didn't like it that much. Sure, it is very safe and I was a few blocks from Bloomingdales and there was a grocery store, Duane Reade and restaurants, but the area still felt office-y, noisy during the day and lacking any character. It is not an area where you would just walk around, looking for a nice little restaurant for dinner or Sunday brunch.
Near Sutton Place, still midtown East, is extremely residential...
True. Also quite a walk to the subway.
