For the most part, buses are slow as heck, and are generally not worth taking, except limited buses.

When I take the LIRR, i tend to walk 20-25 blocks daily to work. Most of the time, its faster than the subway. I have been doing this for years!

funny, I'm actually a runner. I ran from LI to Manhattan quite a handful of times...loosely 20-25 miles each way. During the blackouts/sandy storms, I actually ran from Queens to Midtown....easy 8-9 miles
