The silver lining of being behind in technological solutions has always been that there's a leapfrog technology that is better overall (including their ubiquity). That leapfrog effect isn't used when you belatedly go with outdated technology that isn't easily extensible.

This is a halfway entry point even as it is an improvement. It's like giving people a Sega 32X when other systems have moved on to a Playstation.
Nowhere in the article does it say whether or not they will use NFC. It says they are currently testing things out with MTA employees using a barcode on the smartphones, and that this will soon extend to 14 stations for transfers between LIRR or MNRR and the subways while they work on a wider system by summer of next year.

Idiotic.
I live in a building where the majority are not even capable of using e-mail or finding a web site. Demanding that they get shiny new I-phones to ride the subway is preposterous.

Then they might be screwed. The MTA is thinking long term, and not aiming at seniors who won't be riding the subway in a few years.

Using your smartphone to purchase your ticket has been available on the LIRR and the MNRR for over a year. Most people who ride public transportation in NY have smartphones.

Not NICE to screw over seniors, especially VOTING seniors.

The MTA is thinking long term

It would be the first time.

This is thinking short term while also not thinking currently. NFC can be both smartphones and wireless tap cards. This is money spent on a lesser middle step when the next step is already in existence and usage elsewhere. Write your representatives, because this is dumb.

Nywriterdude is being edgy for the sake of being edgy

The flaws of a smartphone only system are too obvious to ignore. What if there's a hold on your debit card, or your phone is lost or stolen, of if the battery is dead, and of course people who don't have smartphones.
