Why don't we use the same one Chicago is using. You have one card, it's like a credit card, which you keep indefinitely. You keep refilling it. It's a scan and go. No errors. I was in Chicago in May, they actually have their old MetroCards in a museum. It looks something like the second picture.

I'd before for an overhaul if students and senior citizens were no longer allowed free and reduced fair metrocards. Those two demographics are the biggest scrubs when it comes to our transit system.

By the way, this e-tix app has been on the LIRR and the MNRR for a YEAR and it has worked so well they are now testing it out on subways.
A smartphone only system would be dumb and you know it

They could have a smartphone system in tandem with something else

By 2020 the MTA has said they will phase out metrocards entirely. They may use wireless contact cards in addition to smartphones.

But what if we don't want our identity and lives, financial and otherwise, privy to the MTA? I have a semi-smart phone, more dumb than smart. it's all i can afford. Again, what about us?
It sucks to be you. Of course people made these same excuses when the internet and online merchandising came out. You can chose to be left behind.

Actually I think it probably sucks more to be you, but whatever.

How much does this new system cost and are any potential savings worth it (i.e. will they save the taxpayer money . . . how long will it take to recoup costs before they roll out the next "new" system?).

*lol* Hate to say it, but some people are lost souls. Cannot feel sorry for those who refuse to do things for themselves.

Ah boy, some people here just whine. Metrocards are passé, need something quicker and more convenient.

Let them whine away. It won't do any good or stop anything. Meanwhile the MTA will continue with it's upgrades and buying tickets on smartphones has been on MNRR and LIRR for a year. The success of that rollout has lead to testing and will lead to the rollout on the subway system. Metrocards are going to be DONE for in 2020 as the railroad industry no longer supports them.
