If it eliminates the people begging for a swipe, then I'm all for it. I don't do unlimited (my usage makes Pay Per Ride a better value for me), but even if I did, I wouldn't give them a swipe. That practice makes me so angry - I go to work to pay for this fare and you stand around expecting me to give you one for free?! F outta here...
I'm not thrilled about it being on my phone, but I have used the MetroNorth/LIRR eTix app and it's ok. I ride those a few times a year tho. Don't think I'd want it for my primary means of getting to work. The MTA is just so incompetent that I don't trust them to implement anything right.
Not to worry, if Diblasio has his way, subway fare will be based on income, and all low income people will get free subway fare

Well then so be it. But they ain't getting it directly from me. I don't have direct control over what happens to my tax dollars (and if you think you do, you're delusional). I do have direct control over what happens to MY dollars.
Will this affect Transitchek and getting metrocards with pre-taxed income? that's another issue I have with this other than the fact that you need a a credit card and a smart phone. I say go ahead with the program, but give people other options if they don't want to be part of that. And if your metrocard is attached to a credit card and your smart phone info, everyone has the potential of knowing exactly where you are coming and going. no thanks! i like my privacy.
Great! 20 years tardy to the party, and when this is done NY will only be 10 years behind Chicago and San Francisco.
Sorry, look to Chicago for their AMAZING implementation of the Ventra Card which is NFC capable AND can also be paid for using an APP ANNNNND can also be paid for with ANY Credit Card with NFC.
MTA purposefully builds trash to keep people employed.

The Metrocard is fine, the only issue is that the contract expires in 2019
And SF and Chicago's subway systems don't even come close to ours overall

That's the attitude that will keep you in the dark ages.
NYC transit is large, but it's subpar in just about every other way.

Single seat from Manhattan to Kennedy. Want to take bets on when that becomes a thing?

Why the hell are they doing barcode instead of NFC. This is the dumbest half step possible.
I know that MTA was looking at NFC a year ago.
I am pretty sure its either the author of the article doesn't know what she is talking about and those things are also NFC readers, or this is some kind of prototype pilot using barcodes just for tests.
The original thought was to have payments done with contactless cards, smartcards, and smartphones through NFC. NFC would also allow painless transition to integration of all regional rail agencies into integrated single fare system down the road.

Yea, NFC is certainly the way to go because of it's versatility and future-proofing. It's already been deployed in other systems in the world and is slated for deployment in several places. It's a head scratcher to see the MTA spend money on a barcode pilot program as it falls short of NFC in pretty much every way possible while still having to go through the general expense and time of having to overhaul an entire system. This is ridiculous.
And nothing about the local bus or express bus because when MTA thinks about MTA they think subway? What will happen with those Metrocards or will the buses be slow refitted with these fancy new machines that can read a phone that people now have to make sure they never leave home without.
