I’m at the point where I can switch to GHI from HIP Basic- is there a reason why most people choose GHI? I’ve compared the two from the nyc site but there’s so much damn information it’s hard to see what the real difference is. Thanks in advance.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT choose HIP over GHI
I mistakenly chose HIP when I first started (because the lady explaining the health care plans said she had HIP so I figured it was the best option). Let me tell you, my first year on the job, I broke my hand. I had to jump through so many hurdles to get seen by an orthopedic.
Basically, HIP requires a referral from your primary doctor if you want to see a specialist. There were so many times, my doctor would send the referral over to the specialist, and they would say they never received it. A big headache.
Also, HIP is not accepted by everyone and can only be used in NY. If you were out of state and needed medical attention, you would have to pay out of pocket

Gotcha thanks for the explanation. I’ll definitely be switching over, we were forced to keep HIP for one year before being able to switch. The copays are pretty similar in your experience right?
I got it on an internal email. They stated it was just published on their public site so I don't know what's going on.
Anyway you will see eventually.
If it goes like the 5001 exam, application period would be late 2020 around Nov-Dec
Exam would be Spring 2021
Hiring would begin July-Aug 2021
5001 test application was October 2014, the first hiring was July of 2016. It took them over a year just to establish the list after the test. 5001 list will be around through 2021 at least. Who know if they hire next year but if they do it will be from 5001.

Looking at Open Data, looks like 5001 is extended thru 03/2021. If here is no hiring this Summer/Fall off of 5001, looks like that would be the end of it. 03/2021 is during night plow still, no training in march.
