That's the first reaction of most of us, but "should have" doesn't come into play in these situations. You are thinking with a logical mind that she did not have.
I read a story in Vogue a few years ago about a mother who attempted suicide after her four-year-old daughter died of cancer. She also had a husband and two sons. She was hospitalized for a long time and at the time of the article was working to re-establish her relationship with her husband and remaining children.
She said people told her what you said above about suicide being selfish and the harm it would cause her family. She said that NOW she could understand why people would say that, but at the time of her attempted suicide she was not capable of such a thought. The only thought she had was "end the pain".
It's true you never know what someone else is really going through. It's so terrible for her daughter though.
Partner was in the fashion industry and he had never heard of her either.
Then the two of you must be older than dirt; because Kate Spade and her handbags/leather goods at least have been around for decades.
Perhaps will cut you *some* slack as she mostly did ladies handbags and such so unless you and your partner carry purses (or needed to purchase one) either of you *may* not have heard.
No, I take that back, because if your partner was "in the fashion industry" as you say Kate Spade was constantly mentioned in Women's Wear Daily (WWD), which is the bible of that business.
Also would her brand be more popular now that she's gone? Not sure how the fashion world reacts to popular designers passing away. Didn't the Versace brand get more popular after he was killed?

There are folks hawking t shirts on Jamaica Ave who consider themselves 'in the fashion industry'.
Many suicides seek mental health "help" before the big event. It rarely helps.
Well, that's depressing.
