A hostel with an extended stay option, or a rooming house. This is very useful, and I expect will be very popular among young professional people doing internships, or in a similar entry-level stage of career. Thankfully it will likely not be popular (as some comments here already suggest) among lower-income people who think the world owes them everything, including free luxury housing. I would totally use it myself (59 year old semi-retired professional woman), and in fact likely will in LA. The only issue is that the demand will likely overstrip the supply about millionfold, and waiting lists will be 30 years long, unless more of these pods open. In fact, more of them probably will. In fact, investing in this type of thing is probably equal to being one of the people who bought the early Amazon stock.
you can get a studio in a doorman building and convert it to 2 rooms for $2400 a month. It is a much better deal better privacy and nicer. I know a lot of students that do that in the financial district.
It all depends on the quality of the other residents there. If they are trash, then the stay there will be unpleasant and it won't work.
Trash can't pay $1,200 per month unless they have "a voucher". This is not a subsidized housing but a market enterprise. It is priced just right to keep any trash out. Plus, trash would consider it a jail, they would not want a 10 PM lights curfew, or no guests, or any other normal house rules.

I used to think this too but I have personal experiences that tells me trash can surprisingly show up in unexpected places.
For example, one time I was traveling and booked into a quality brand hotel that was on the pricey side. Running into ghetto trash was the furthest from my mind but that's exactly what was there.
