NYC schools should become the first testing areas. Since DeBlasio doesn't want to close the schools. I believe it's not a bad thing to do since some many working parents can't just keep the kids home. What the city should do is bring health officials to start testing every kid and teacher that comes into school.

Kids are basically like virus sponges, they bring so much viruses from school to home to spread diseases to their families. They should be tested while at school so we can stop further spreading.

Keeping the kids in school if they've all been tested would be better than keeping the kids home where they aren't being monitored that can endanger the welfare of the kids.

From the NYTIMES:
"The highly influential union that represents New York City’s public health care workers reversed course on Sunday and called on Mayor Bill de Blasio to close the city’s public schools. The union, 1199SEIU, had been the only major union supporting Mr. de Blasio’s decision to keep schools open.

Mr. de Blasio pointed to the union’s support as a rationale for keeping schools open as recently as Friday. The union had said it was concerned that mass school closures could keep essential medical personnel at home, caring for their children.

But the leaders of 1199 and the city’s teachers union, the United Federation of Teachers, have been in negotiations throughout the weekend to provide emergency child care for the public school children of health care employees.

“I have been in discussion with other allies on the possibility of providing this much needed child care through school resource centers, and I am confident that a plan will be reached to ensure that these children receive the care they need while their parents work,” George Gresham, 1199’s president, said in a statement on Sunday afternoon.

The union’s reversal significantly ramps up the pressure on Mr. de Blasio to close city schools.

Also, New Jersey governor has just said a shutdown of all schools in the state is imminent. Nassau County ordered all schools shut down earlier today. It seems like everything around NYC is shutting down yet the vast majority of virus is in NYC but NY is doing nothing.
Something is wrong with this picture.

Quebec Prime minister Legault last friday ordered all schools to close starting monday.

I agree. But that is De Blasio's spin on why he is INSISTING in keeping the schools open.
He's also upset that the Manhattan Public Libraries have decided to close.
And is delighted that Queens Library is still open.
Yeah....yeah....

You mean keep them prisoned inside the schools for the duration once they have been "cleared" ? Because otherwise they might just as well pick it up on a bus or a subway on the way home and spread it around at home before bringing it back the next day. The tests are not "instant read". It takes at least a few days for results. The whole idea of closing the schools is to stop the back and forth and stop the large concentration of humanity in a confined space.

Teachers are threatening to boycott over this. This virus is "kind" to kids. If they have it, it won't affect them quite the same way that it affects adults, particularly those over 60 or those with compromised immune systems. The kids are ok but the adults who are in contact with them...um...not so much. Teachers are planning to call in sick. Forget De Blasio.

If you see what is going on in the hospitals, it is crazy.

They can order all of the testing they want---they cannot keep up with the increasing demand yet.
