Nah as a female who used to take the train solo in the wee hours of the morning I have never felt unsafe until the past few years. Now since covid it's like another world.
How often are you on the train outside of typical office hours?
I always take the train off peak as well. Since I've worked throughout this entire pandemic, I've taken the train the entire time. I agree with you---the last five years or so are worse than maybe 10-15 years ago. And now with fewer people on the train later at night, it's extra unnerving---sometimes I'm the only one in my train car.

I hate when I'm the only one in a car. Last week I had to go to Queens (179th Street), which is the last stop on the F. At one point there was 3 of us in the car, homeless man, crazy man talking to himself threating to punch everyone, and me. Thankfully the crazy man left a few stops after he got on. Then was just me and a homeless man left in the car the last few stops. At one point he got up and went between cars. Came back with his pants down so I assumed he had to pee. At the last stop I looked how many people exited, there was 3 of us total in the whole train.

Yeah, as a woman I used to take the subway at all hours and while of course you're much more careful in the middle of the night I didn't generally feel unsafe. Wouldn't do that right now. Not because of the homeless (God rest that poor soul, he was obviously severely mentally ill)--but because any bad guy will find it easier to operate with so few people around.
I've taken the 2 off peak late night in the Bronx and it does get rowdy. I've never taken the 4 off-peak late night in the Bronx.
I used to take the 4 to/from Woodlawn, but rarely late night. The few times I did (late for me is like 10PM), it was mostly a bunch of very tired looking workers. Few crazies since there's not much up there at the end of the line. They kick all the sleepers off the train at the end.
This was a few years ago, don't know what it looks like now.

I have not experienced being the only one in the car since Spring. My commute seems to be half full at all times but I remember that experience of being alone or with few people. You know whats sad though? That even in a more crowded car no one usually will help. Maybe they will call the PD and show them a recording of it all after at best. By then its too late, as the damage is done and with everyone wearing a mask they are unlikely to get caught as it is.
