It's a way of keeping people out of Uber, Lyft and their cars.

If you stop "catch and release" policies for arrested accused criminals it goes back.

Why keep complaining and still use the services. No one is being forced.
MTA is stealing from non riders too. They are stealing in form of MTA payroll tax, MTA tolls, gas tax, etc. Now they want to steal more from congestion pricing. Almost all NYers pay for their incompetence and theft.

One recent payback is all the WFH workers will sting them badly.

MTA could double or even triple the fares and still be in the red.

"Congestion pricing" is a topic worthy of its own thread. When I have the time I will start it.

the MTA has been crying poverty since the 70's
time to wipe the tears already and get a new accounting system because whatever they are doing is not working.

Viable alternatives are taxed to pay for their competitors (Non NYC Subsidized Ferries, Jitney Buses, even Rideshare Operators who work in NYC).

MTA products price point is inexplainable- Ferries cost a ton to subsidize but their cost is equal to Subway. SI Ferry Remains Free. Commuter rail costs high despite high subsidy- yet Bridges and Tunnels are incredibly costly with the lowest cost to operate.
This can't be explained.

Does MTA set prices based on Cost to Operate, Greater Good to Society, Price their customers an afford... or is it targeted? In that case I understand why those who pay bridges and tolls feel they are paying the most for the least return of service.

Taxi costs are $1 to MTA just for sitting down in the yellow cab. This costs hurts the industries competition- and during peak hours is problematic as cabs reduce stress on the MTA systems.

The MCTMT is FLAT across the board. This is insane that a school teaching dance on the North Fork of Long Island which may have 15 employees- none of who, nor any customer uses an MTA product on a monthly basis- are required to fund a system that does not impact them.

I'm with SirTiger- the MTA latches onto ANY source it can as an excuse for not getting it's own financials under wraps. Cut the budget. Trim the fat. Accept service cuts, or better yet- no need for cuts because you are overpaying for EVERYTHING.

Now let's compare all of this to how much it actually costs to maintain the infrastructure + pay people to do so, and we'll be getting somewhere...

Things aren't looking good.

https://nypost.com/2022/07/25/one-th...ys-post-covid/

However forecasts are just that, anything can happen. That being said city, Albany and MTA need to face the fact, because it is a fact WFH is here to stay. Number of office and some other workers going in five days per week likely will never reach same numbers as 2018.

Throw in effects from online retail and people have less reasons to travel into or about city.

Furthermore if perception holds that city is dirty, and crime infested (regardless of actual truth in numbers), people are going to stay away.

It took Sam the Eagle and Bozo the Clown bit over eight years (and counting) to reverse so many of gains city made since 1970's.
