Reflective vests, laws prohibiting passing a stopped garbage truck wont prevent these accidents. YOU are responsible for getting yourself and your partner back home in one piece at the end of your shift. I have seen too many get killed and hurt on this job, been hit,and nearly hit numerous times. Cars will try anything to get by the truck, including driving on the sidewalk. Doesnt seem to matter how safe you try and work either, some of the safest workers I know have been victims. If the truck wont block the entire street and you have both sides of the street,STAY ON ONE SIDE! The driver should work from the side the loader is picking up so he/she doesnt have to step into passing traffic. Its not the end of the world if you must circle around and come back to do the other side later. And for the rookies that just came on the job(and some senior workers too)while driving ALWAYS pay attention to your loader while they are out. If your eyes arent on them,DO NOT MOVE THE TRUCK! Dont assume anything. Especially in bad weather like we've been having, doesnt take much to slip on something and fall near the wheels of the truck. Combine this with nighttime and crappy truck mirrors. Id rather be angry at you for not having seen me walk up to the next stop then being run over by my own truck. Words to live by. Say a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters.

It came from the trainers and foremen at Floyd Bennett that they are expecting 150 new hires between June & July and another possible 150 towards the fall.......The head of the union had mentioned to us during the storms that he had a meeting with the deputy mayor and that he came out of that meeting very happy. I expect that they will hire this summer but the actual amount is up in the air....but that's just my two cents
