I would guess that you two were different people all along who were put together due to government policies (a.k.a. assigning people into school districts). When each of you were no longer subjected to those government policies, you drifted apart into what would have been the normal situation all along had you and your friend not been subjected to those government policies.

What would society be like if everyone was home-schooled either by qualified parents, a qualified nanny or a professional tutor?

well... I'm 25 and I had a tight group of friends right from the beginning. We all went to school together from about 3 years old until we all left for various universities at 18. There were maybe 9 or 10 of us from the start and added more good friends along the way. I still saw them all quite a bit when I'd come home, but that got less frequent and now the last time I saw everyone together was 4 years ago. I saw a few of them about 2.5-3 years ago after graduating my first degree and haven't really had any contact with them since. I've lost touch completely due to being away at graduate school and never having been into the whole facebook thing, so right now I have no idea what they're doing. Presumably they still get together. It does depress me and I think about getting back in touch somehow, but I feel a bit weird about it.
