Do you consider this rude?: I have a couple of friends that only ever call me when they are in the car driving somewhere. To me, it feels as though they don't want to waste their precious time calling, so they only call when they have nothing else to do but drive.

The other day a friend called while she was driving...she always does but THIS time she was blabbing so much she missed her freeway exit AND turned down the wrong street going towards her house...so much for distracted driving...
If you've got "a couple" of friends who do this, then that speaks volumes about you. They must see you as a pushover. By now you should have already told them "don't call me when you're driving." You also have the option of not answering the phone when they call.
Why do you care when they call you? At least they're calling you; most people just text instead of calling since they don't even want to waste the time it takes to call.
You're just a diversion to them and they can kill two birds with one stone: have something to do while they are driving, and discharge any obligation they feel to keep in touch with you. I had one friend who did this all the time. It was super annoying because she only had half her brain in the conversation and would keep losing the thread of what she or I was saying. She turned out to be very self centered in all other areas of our friendship as well.
I'm not the OP, but I'm on his side. I have one friend who calls when he's driving, and it's the noisiest phone call I receive. He has to put it on speakerphone, he says. I told him to call me some time when I could actually hear him. He hasn't bothered.
I have a friend who calls me while she's driving and puts me on speaker phone. I have to strain to hear her, which is frustrating.
And yes, I've been on the phone with people who call while they're driving and I get to hear the play-by-play of what's going on around them. I hate it.
When I know it's just a quick phone call, I don't mind dealing with noise & distracted conversations. But it seems the same callers keep repeating the rude behavior. I've started saying "I need to go" or "I've got another call", or the "I can't hear you" excuse works too.
I hate speaker phone calls, but I do use my 4 hour trips up to check on my mother to catch up with friends. It makes the drive go faster, and nobody has ever complained. My friends would have no problem telling me if they objected.
