That's why people like that call you.

Hang up. Its that simple. Their are a million reasons why a phone disconnects. Pick one. Now, doesn't that feel better?

My sister would start to bang the phone on the table and tell the person there was a bad connection and that she was going to hang up. Which she would.

Just hang up in the middle of a sentence.

When YOU are speaking.

Then don't answer the phone when they call back.

Next time you see them, claim that the phone malfunctioned.

My Mom's uncle is like this. It's so bad that when I was living at home and the phone rang, you could tell it was ol' Uncle Charlie by the look of morbid horror on the answerer's face (and for some reason Mom is NEVER home when he calls).

Every time he called was an ordeal, and when I went to visit family in another state I met him face to face. I guess he always called because family in his area stopped letting him come visit because he'd talk all damn day and never leave.. even if they said "Charlie we seriously need you to go now" and tried to escort him out he would get a bit defensive and tense until he was allowed to start talking again.

When I was there, my Aunt and I were in a car leaving the family function we were at, and Charlie was talking so much to us in the car that after one warning my Aunt just started rolling up the power window (for my side) and drove off.

She said "He gets one warning that the conversation is over. That's more than enough courtesy for someone that shows you none."

She was right, if someone won't let you off the line consistently, they aren't showing any courtesy, so why show them any?

My friend used to say, OK, I don't want to talk to you anymore. It was unspoken that he half meant it and was half joking.

I just tell them I have to go somewhere or that the phone is almost dead. I mean--what's the big deal?
