Good idea, Scooby. I've also used "I've got to go to the bathroom," "There's somebody at the door," "I've got a call on the other line," etc.
What galls me is that these two folks -- and one is worse than the other -- keep coming back to the same routine. They've been doing it for years.
Their lack of consideration pushes me into taking action that I don't like. I honestly don't like making excuses.
And you know, I've told them this explicitly. It's not some unspoken complaint that I'm harboring.
I guess it comes down to putting up with it or just X'ing them off the list. It will be the former, because I basically like them despite their ceaseless yakking.
Well, sounds like you really want out.. stop speaking to them, then. Or be direct - explain what is bothering you, so that it does not continue.
Yes. I do know people in the past as well as my sister in law who does this. One hour turns to an hour and a half.
I do realize that no one can force me to keep talking/listening longer than I want to. I am choosing to stay on the phone that long. Good advice has been given and I am learning myself.
If they are being persistent after you say you need to go then use one of these old standbys:
My battery is dying and I left my charger at work or I cant find it, so if the phone cuts off that is why.
I've got a call on the other line from my mom or kid or wife/husband.
Dinner is burning!
Kids need help with homework.
Really, anything you can think of that you actually have to do, because who has time to sit on the phone for over an hour.
