I remember when men used to get tattoos, it was mostly from their military days, and the stereotype of men in the military is "tough" and "masculine." Another group that would get tattoos were the "bikers," another stereotypical "tough" group.
Now it seems like the opposite in my generation(millennials). The men getting tattoos these days are the white metrosexual/feminine hipsters who sip on their Starbucks lattes with their big glasses. It seems like nearly every guy around my age with a visible tattoo is metrosexual or "wimpy." It might be because tattoos these days are more popular with the females, and getting things like sleeve tattoos are more feminine.
Maybe its just me, but it seems like more of the granola type males are the ones getting tattoos as opposed to the tough bikers/military men of past generations. I mean, look at someone like Justin Bieber-feminine male all tatted up. What do you think?
yes, this is true. it is the mark of the avg emasculated hipster. it is now cool to go straight with no tattoos.. gotta be ahead of the times.
I think around WWII times only guys in the Navy had tattoos, then after that it was sailors and bikers. Now it's just everyone, it isn't certain categories anymore.

Correct. At one time & probably up until the early '90's?!, if you were a guy & got tatted up you were probably considered - or considered yourself - a "tough" guy.
These days, so many people have tattoos that the whole thing has become somewhat meaningless. I.e., if you have a tattoo these days, so what?!
It also used to be that women with tats were considered "edgy" and somewhat "wild". Now, not so much anymore.
I have nothing against tattooes, I have 13 of them myself (that sounds like an obscenely large number), but they are all small and I only regret two of them. That said, tattoos totally ruined porn. It really is a turn off seeing such jejune and puerile crap on peoples' bodies.
...and medical insurance does not pay for this type of elective procedure...nor should it pay!
I was about to say the same thing.
My parents for many years were friends with a couple who ran a tattoo shop in my hometown, that is until the couple's death in a car accident in 1995. Both of them were VERY picky as to whom they would tattoo and on top of that they would require a week "waiting period" in order for the person who wants the tattoo to..well think about it.
I can still remember when they were at our house one night a few years before their deaths and right there on the TV were Roseanne Barr and Tom Arnold showing off their new tats on their butts. One would think that running a tattoo studio they would be thrilled with the possibility of increased business thanks to such big stars getting tats...ah no as both the hubby and wife were totally disgusted as I can recall one of them saying "..Now everyone will want a tattoo especially those who really shouldn't get one...who will be next ?? Corky ( Chris Burke ) from Life Goes On ??" Natalie from The Facts of Life ?? GAG !!".
