For as long as I can remember, I've asked "How was your day?" Shoot, I remember vividly as a kid, when my dad came home from work, after saying hi I asked, "How was your day?" His most popular response: "Tiring!"

Same here. They usually just say, "Paper or plastic?".

They could just be empty words also. I believe most people are just programmed to say the usual nice things, or what they believe is the right thing to say. They could not have any real feelings behind them at all. I believe action speaks louder than words, and the other person saying guess how my day went could actually be the better person. I don't believe you will get much sympathy from most people out there, if you go to a social event knowing that you are sick and sneezing and coughing all over the place. You should only be out and around people only if you absolutely have to if you are sick. People don't appreciate you spreading germs and getting others sick as well. You could cause the event not to be fun for others, if everybody is trying to avoid you or wondering if they should eat or drink anything you been near. Just stay home in that case,

Well, I sometimes will say to my spouse, "Guess what happened to me today?" before I ask about his day. That's typically only when something out of the ordinary happened that I want to share. Don't think it makes me a narcissist.

In either situation, you need to have a lot of self respect and confidence so you can come up with an effective RESPONSE to their negative comments. In other words, you need to know how to handle it.
