You are missing a perfect opportunity to have some fun when someone asks you that. You could start to help them, acting like you work there, then become rude and insulting. It would be fun to watch them go to the manager and complain about his "rude employee". Think how funny it would be when he explains that he/she doesn't work there !

This used to happen to me kind of often and I never figured out why. I suppose I looked young but I was definitely not dressed like anyone who worked in the store. I also had the occasional person huff/get rude when I told them I had no idea where their item or whatever was located. Yep, it is annoying because the person asking often reeks of entitlement and seems the think that everyone around them must be there specifically to serve his/her highness.
I used to be a security guard at a bank in downtown Pittsburgh. I was only 20 years old at the time. I wore the uniform, hat, badge, whole 9 yards.
For my lunch break, I would leave the bank and go to a fast food restaurant for lunch, and if I had any extra time, I would browse the department stores.
I can't count the number of times that I was stopped and asked for directions, whether it was a specific department in the stores, or somewhere in the city in general.
I honestly hate being asked if I know where things are in stores or if I work at the store. It seems I'm always asked even if I don't have the best or clothes that are common to the store. Please tell me I'm not the only one who is annoyed by this.
happens to me most everywhere I go but I often wear a smock and like to where a name tag too. I try and answer the best that I can but admittedly, a lot of times I send them towards the back of the store and head for the checkout myself.

I work security too though it is common to get asked where X is at my place of work. I guess I'm going to online shopping bevaus e I get asked where everything is.

If you're about ready to leave the store, I suppose you could tell them with a bad attitude in your tone of voice that you're on your unpaid lunch break and this place doesn't pay you enough money to work or even talk about work while on your unpaid lunch break so they need to find another employee to ask. If they say anything back, tell them to go hash it out with the manager, that you ain't got time to deal with it right now, then head for the exit.
