You are making a lot of assumptions and now you have a wall around you or some kind of weird vibe you may be putting out and people are responding to that, MAYBE.
Honestly just be your cheery self, go about your business , go to the local gathering and have fun. If people can’t see the incongruity of what they heard and what they see then you are actually better off not knowing them beyond a smile and a wave.
It's too soon to come to any conclusions, and you have no sound evidence that the evesdropping even occurred. I would go to the party and try to get to know them all better. They are probably curious about you as the new one to their rural area. Think ahead about what you do and don't want to tell them about yourself, and show interest in them too without being nosey. Be aware that you may be better educated, less religious, more prosperous, and/or more traveled than your neighbors, but they may have practical skills and knowledge that you lack. Ask them questions about the area.

Show them that you can be open and gregarious. You can't always help people's perceptions of you, but it seems like this gathering is a golden opportunity to try.[/QUOTE/] I'm going.
