I don't like 'em because heirlooms are hocked for another roll of the dice. I don't like 'em because old ladies get their purses snatched to fund 2 hours at the black jack table.
So, what you are saying is, just because a select few cannot control the fun they have, you are forming a decision (and using highly EXAGGERATED EXAMPLES) for the rest of the people who can control it, and view it as another form of entertainment?

With that logic, are you for banning all alcohol sales because some people turn into alcoholics...??

How about banning ALL bingo games because some people spend money they shouldn't????

Where does the big brother attitude stop??

Amazing the thinking people have behind their decisions.....

I don't think it's that "amazing", but hey... To each their own.

It's a cultural thing. You, not being from around here, don't understand it. I don't blame you, and I won't belittle you for it. Don't try to sell me on the "all the locals want it" line though.

You like to gamble, I don't. You want a casino, I don't. That's all. If enough people want it, it will happen eventually. I hope that time isn't now.

There are reasons gambling is looked upon unfavorably and they aren't follies of my imagination. This is another instance of transplants bringing their customs to my community, and I think it's trashy. Sue me. I didn't move to Rochester and moan and complain about no sweet tea and grits and insult the locals because they don't get it...

If you wanna gamble, gamble with your buddies.

Ok, I'll play your little game.... GREAT example of a product that people don't want big brother to interfere with is cigarettes...people want that vice legal, but gambling is different?

They both are potentially two deadly vices if abused and can affect other people...

So, what's the difference? I think cigarettes are TRASHY, but if people want to smoke themselves to death and get emphazema/lung cancer & look trashy doing it, they should HAVE THE FREEDOM to knock themselves out.....same thing goes for alcohol. I don't really drink much, but if someone wants to get sloshed, go for it! why are you picking out 1 vice over the other?

See what I'm getting at?

p.s. I can't gamble with my buddies, because big brother (govco) says I can't

That's the rub CouponJack... YOU ARE PICKING MY VICES! I haven't said squat about alcohol, but then again we are not considering the legalization (or sanctioning, if you will) of alcohol... or cigarettes. Admittedly it's more difficult to put the genie back in the lamp.

I'm sure YOU have a line... Prostitution? Hard drugs? Bestiality? One of mine are casinos. I've been to Vegas. I've been to Reno. I've been to Atlantic City. Yeah, there's lots of lights and pretty things, but I see desperation and sickness all over those places. Please pardon me for not wanting to unleash that on the towns I grew up in. It's not a matter of "picking 1 vice over the other"... it's a matter of keeping away the vices that are already away.

And it's no "little game" for me. Despite what you may think. You may think my examples are full of hyperbole and that's fine, they probably are. But if one little seven year old girl is spared the trauma of gambling addict parents it's worth it in my opinion. Because I value one child more than a thousand casinos. I didn't do very well in business class.

I've spent plenty of time in Gaston and Cleveland County, and I have a lot of relatives in those areas. I'd guess that it's not the locals that want a casino (by and large), but the transplants who want their AC in the south. My people don't want 'em. Those of us who went to Sherwood & Robinson Elementary, Grier Junior High, Ashbrook and Hunter Huss... those of us whose families built up the Schiele Museum and taught at Belmont Abbey... those of us whose families are in law enforcement or school administration... THOSE are the people I'm talking about. The people whose ancestors are buried in Gaston County soil going back 150+ years don't want this, so don't act like they're throwing a parade on main street, lol... 'cause they ain't.

It may create a few thousand dollar-an-hour type jobs, but casinos work because they keep most of the money that comes through the place. Casino business is not philanthropy. If you want to gamble, have a wednesday night poker game with friends... that's the way we gamble in the South.
I voted for the casinos in AC because the jobs were desparately needed. I went as a customer one time. I picked up per diem work occasionally. I'm hardly a big fan of casinos as a place to go, but I saw farmers save the family farm by taking a job at the casinos. I know a whole lot of people who raised their kids because those casinos gave them a way to make a living. That's how I see casinos.

I have not heard one single word of opposition in Kings Mountain or Gastonia. Not one word, & I am speaking of natives. However, most of the people who I talk to are just trying to pull themselves back up by their bootstraps.

I ran into a reporter from WBTV today & he asked me where he could find someone, anyone, who was opposed. He & his cameraman were desparate. I told him that he might find someone in Gastonia, but that everyone who I've had contact with is elated. Then I told him, why don't you go to Lincolnton. You should be able to find someone there.

By the way, I thought that this was the Catawbas' idea. Aren't they natives?

Is Cherokee a dump? A cesspool of depravity? Or is it generating millions into the NC economy plus a huge number of jobs?

Don't even bother with the obvious assumptions.....no matter how much good this could bring to a slew of people, the decision for some people will be made based on a very very small minority of people who cannot voluntarily control themselves...

Yes to the first question. And most of "millions" go to the Cherokee tribe. Cherokee is part of my sales territory, and I hear of all kinds of crimes that don't get reported in state or national news. One example sticks out--last year, a 70+-yr-old woman was gambling for hours and doing very well one night. She left around 1 am by herself & was robbed & killed by gunshot in the parking garage there. They took her cash winnings.

But apparently an increase in murder is unusual~

"Except for murder, all major crimes tracked by the FBI -- rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft -- increased significantly after counties allowed casinos to open. The study by Georgia economics Professor David B. Mustard and Illinois economic Professor Earl L. Grinols -- examined crime rates for every county in the United States from 1977 to 1996."

Is there a construction due to expansion going on? Yes, absolutely.

I've been to Cherokee casino a bunch of times and can say with 100% certainty that it is NOT a dump so the post above is false. Again, people post exaggerated, uncommon/unproven/false situations to try to prove a point that is just not there.....
