In what state? Honestly, by the tone of your posts in this thread, I'm not inclined to believe you. The many teachers I've spoken with all express deep frustration with the current decisions to short-change teachers, history and political problems not withstanding. The don't care what happened even three years ago - the current NC government let them down, and they're looking forward to the opportunity to vote.

Where does NC rank as far as teacher pensions? I was always told that one of the reasons to become a teacher (which was the career I chose back in the early 70s) that the pay may not be the best but the pension and benefits were quite robust, especially in comparison to any other job (other than state/federal government jobs).
You know, most of us don't have any sort of pension these days.
When looking at statistics on compensation, one really needs to consider the whole picture.
This residents of this state are not just paying taxes to cover teacher salaries; we are also paying taxes to cover their pensions.
I don't know how this works in NC but in NJ teachers can do pretty well. Friend of mine taught in Irvington NJ a real battle zone. He's been retired for 6 years now and toward the end it got hairy. Long story short with a Masters degree and 33 years in he receives $1000 a week pension. How much money do you need to have in a bank or bonds to yield $52000 a year?

But the current hagan/tillis vote won't mean much to education in NC, so we can debate that in another thread.
Yet education in NC is Hagan's only point in her campaign adverts. You are correct however that neither party would do much for education in NC except that Tillis might vote to get the over reaching and intrusive federal government out of state education.
