I am an educator who was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have dreams of living in a small bungalow with flowers, trees, etc., great neighbors, a sense of community, and walking distance to places to eat and shop. I am wondering if Salisbury fits the bill. I have been to Charlotte several times and I don't have an issue with driving there when I need 'big time' shopping - so there is no problem there.

I have driven through Salisbury, because I had to make a stop at Livingston College. I loved the homes in the area surrounding the college. What are the demographics of the folks that live in those homes and and what is the price range? I am interested in info on housing, churches, medical care, services for seniors, etc. I would actually love to rent a house first to give me some time to adjust to Salisbury and to get a feel for the city. I would hate to purchase a home and then find out that the neighborhood does not meet my needs. Any ideas on the cost of rentals in a nice neighborhood?

I should say that I am a divorced, retired, African-American educator and I am wondering whether I would be received with open arms. In Los Angeles everyone is welcomed, but I am not so sure about small southern cities.

I did read the message from the retired couple and it sounds very inviting, but THEY ARE A COUPLE. Please let me hear from you.

Good morning. I'm a little disappointed that I have not gotten a reply to my post. Did I say something wrong?

Bunny, don't take it personally. This thread was started two years ago and still only has a relatively small amount of posts. There probably hasn't been anyone on the board with specific information that could help you. I'm sure you'll get some answers soon. You may want to DM some of the people who have posted recently in this thread. You do this by clicking on their name. A drop menu will appear. Click on " Send a Direct message to". Good Luck!

I grew up in Salisbury, hated it as a kid, but in hindsight it was very very good. I just do not have current information for you. Sorry.

I will be coming to Salisbury to check it out in the near future, as my company will probably transfer me there in the spring of 2010. I currently live in a small historic coastal community in New England, and I love it, except for the cold winters! My main question is this . . . are there ANY liberals in Salisbury? Is there a primarily liberal (and accepting) church? I am concerned about moving from a liberal thinking community to a conservative one, without some pockets of liberalism available. Thanks in advance for your response/advice.

Moved to Salisbury 4/08 From NJ. Had a house built on High Rock Lake. The community is called Sunset Pointe or Sunset Pointe Landing for some Condos. Great people, Honest, friendly.High Rock Community Church seems open minded. Rowan County is predominately Republican, but with 3 colleges in town there is a lot of liberalism. Very diverse. Winter weather is great we had a storm last winter which dropped 2 inches of snow and ice shut Charlotte area down for the day. I understand that the last time there was snow was 2004.

Thanks Boss . . . I'm looking forward to the mild winters! Even on the coast of New England, which is moderate compared to inland, we still have 15 inches of snow, on top of 12 inches, on top of 18 inches, etc. I had to use a chain saw this past winter to remove the icicles growing off my roof down the side of the house. Those icicles were as big around as me! Friends ask me if I think I can stand the humidity in NC. I always tell them no problem, at least I don't have to shovel it!!
