I am looking for advice on the Swiftwater /Poconos area.

Here is my situation:

My wife and I currently live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. She has been offered a job in Swiftwater, and we a looking to possibly move into the area. We will be having children in school soon, so school districts are a factor in our search.

That being said, I have no idea about the area at all, so I started doing searches. Never having been to the area, I had a vision in my head that it was a rural, mountain area. Needless to say after doing some searching, it looks like the area has a rising crime rate, drugs, and a growing gang presence. Not really an area a young family would want to move into.

So if we do make the move, where are some good areas? We would like a house with land, and in a safe area, within about 20min drive of Swiftwater.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Paradise Valley , Henryville, even Swiftwater itself is nice , The main problems are further up the hill in the Mount Pocono, and Tobyhanna area's , Anywhere off of 314 or 715 is nice

Ok so it seems that I want to stay out of the North and East. Is crime a major problem or is being "hyped" by the media?

Mainly drugs and gangs , The gangs are the ones selling the drugs mostly , Just shy away from all the bigger community's ..

There is crime anywhere you go .. some places have more or less then others ..

zoth13,

You might want to take a look up Route 191, in the South Sterling area - or farther north and east. It is not too far from Sanofi (where I presume your wife is going to work). It is in Pike County and not Monroe. The taxes are more reasonable. The schools are better and there is not as much crime.

Don’t forget that we have a casino about half a mile from where your wife will be working. The Pocono Mountain School District has land adjacent to the casino and it is almost adjacent to Sanofi.

There are some pretty good areas in Swiftwater to live in. This is where I live. However; it is more expensive. I guess it depends on what you are really looking for. Are you looking for employment also? Jobs are hard to come by in the Pocono’s. Sanofi is one of our largest employers. If you have to commute to the city; that should also be a consideration.

Anyway; good luck! Do your homework and go into this with your eyes open.

We will be having children in school soon, so school districts are a factor in our search. = The Pleasant Valley school district is highly rated...the elementary and high schools are located in Brodheadsville...not close to Swiftwater but not far either...

I totally agree with this post...If you go up 191 to South Sterling you will be within 20-30 minutes of Swiftwater but in Wayne County and the Wallenpaupack school district...lower taxes...much better school district...and no crime. Pike county is also an option for a much better School District (Delaware Valley SD)...but the commute will be quite a bit longer, as there is no direct route that I can think of from that area.

The Moscow area would also be an option...a little bit further commute to Swiftwater...probably closer to 30 minutes...good school district...but MUCH closer to all of the extra activities and ammenities available in the Scranton area. The Mount Cobb area would also be in a similar position. I believe MOST of the employees at Sanofi tend to live closer to the Scranton area...the housing is much cheaper, the schools tend to be better, and the taxes are lower than in the Poconos....not to mention all of the available services and conveniences that are NOT available in the Poconos.
