Illegal alien cows? I dunno but maybe its a way to get you in the door there is so much competition out there. I did notice that their fish is quite pricey though.

I've never had the privilege of shopping at Wegmans (just moved from backwater Central Pennsylvania). I'm in awe... it's like a mixture of a costco with a really fancy grocery store. the prices are really good on everything (except the produce, which seems to be pretty comparable to other stores).

but the milk thing was just shocking. it's like $3.50+ a gallon at Giant.

Well, I've never seen more grocery stores w/in a 20 mile radius...Giant, Safeway, Costco, Target, Sams Club, Walmart, Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Trader Joes, Whole Foods and the international markets...someone's bound to go under...I suspect Weggie's is seriously undercutting the basic milk staple as a sort of shot accross the bow.

Their butter is cheaper there too.
But I make up for it because I visit the cheese shop.

I LOVE Wegmans. I am continuously amazed at the prices and the huge selection. My favorite French cheese is $10 LESS a pound at Wegmans compared to Whole Foods. Giant and Safeway don't even carry it. Things like detergent, toilet paper, and dog food are less than Giant. Wegmans home brand names are great, especially their pastas, both fresh and frozen. Their produce section is huge and very good. The pharmacy is wonderful. I save over $40 there every month on just two prescriptions. There are no lines at the pharmacy counter and the people who work there are great. All the employees at Wegmans are terrific, very helpful and very upbeat. I can drop off my prescriptions and they're filled within 15 minutes while I shop. They even give you a beeper to let you know when the prescriptions are ready. Those are just some of the reasons why I drive 18 miles to Wegmans at least once a week.

Organic Milk at Whole Foods (their 365 brand) has always been $2.99. Much lower than regular milk at Giant, Safeway, H Mart, etc.

Just a different pricing mentality- Wegmans uses low milk prices to get you in the door and buy their pricey prepared food. Giant uses specials on other food to get you in the door and hopes that, while you're there, you pick up some quite profitable milk.

Target, Costco, Walmart, and BJ's are somewhere in the middle- around 2.50 a gallon for skim milk.
