But what made the plates suddenly shift? Sometimes it's just random, but not always.

I think it's funny that we had an earthquake today, and Hurricane Irene's supposed to blow through on Sunday.

I'm in outskirts of Culpeper, Va. here. It scared the crap out of me. My house shook so bad the cats went one way and I ran out the door. I'm still shaking, never been thru one before. Glad everyone's ok.

The entire earth is made up of plates. Think of a ball made from many differant plates that make up the surface. Over time these plates are pushed from other plates. To let off pressure sections of the plates will give causing an earthquake. Where I live in California you have the North American plate rubbing up against the Pacific plate. If I remember correctly the Pacific plate is forced down while the North America plate slides north and upward, kind of why we have the Rocky Mountains on this side of the nation. When the pressure builds over time it can give way in cracks called fault lines. When the pressure overwelms what is holding it back it moves and you get an Earthquake.
