Will be relocating from the Eastern Panhandle of WV to NoVa, probably summer 2012. Not sure where to start my search.

My office is in Falls Church, Fairview Park Dr.

I have 3 elementary school aged children.

Budget of less than 2500 per month

I will be renting for a while to get a feel for the area as it's a big switch, we currently live in a rural area.

I would like the commute time to be not more than an hour (less is better of course)

Would like to rent a single family home, or worst case, townhouse. Can't do an apartment.

Need to feel safe and would like open mindedness (maybe all of NoVA is that way?!) We are a two mom family with adopted children of multiple races.

Any thoughts or suggestions of where to start?

Check out Reston - there usually are single family homes in your price range for rent and we do have more of a liberal lean than most places in NOVA. You will have to keep an eye out for a SFH rental - I could find none in your budget right now but check out these at $2600.

Save yourself the commuting hassles that so many buy along with a new home. There are nice TH's in and around Fairview Park itself. The surrounding area has at least hundreds more. There are typically SFH's in your price range for rent throughout the area. It is almost all safe and most of the elementary schools are solid. A good place to start looking around is MilitaryByOwner. You don't have to be military to use it. You do have to put in a state and select a nearby military base. Either the Pentagon or Ft Myer should work...
