This was the premise behind me not buying that used E-class in the fall that I fell in love with, even though it was a private sale from a friend at work that is moving out of country (such a killer deal)....the cars worth was still over 45K and I cringed even at the thought of how high the tax bill would be, this year and subsequent years...

The one that gave me that bill is an E-Class...

I'm pretty sure I couldn't sell it for more than 22-23K, but they probably assessed it much higher. I do know the assessment I think is the value on the first of the year.

The tax relief is not 51% in all places. That amount (just like the tax rate) depends on the county.

Prince William County offers 57% relief on a tax rate of $3.70 for 2012. In 2011, they offered 60% relief on the same tax rate. It seems like the relief percentage goes down every year because the amount provided by the state to each county/municipality is capped.

Still, only a low $200s bill for an 07 Toyota Sienna. Taxes are never fun, but it could certainly be a lot worse.

Tax relief for Fairfax County is 63% and the tax rate is $4.57.

Info from Fairfax County's web site:

Motor Vehicles

New residents or those registering a vehicle for the first time must file a car tax registration form within 60 days after purchase or entry into the County.

For vehicle renewals, taxpayers are only required to report changes such as name, address, vehicle ownership, or vehicle location. These changes must be reported to the County by May 1 of each year.

For most vehicles, the tax is based on the clean trade-in value as listed in the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Used Car Guide published in January of the current tax year.

For new model year vehicles, the assessment is based on a percentage of MSRP. This is the base-model MSRP, before options. NADA Guide values are used for subsequent years.

A vehicle is subject to tax if it is normally garaged or parked in the County, even if registered in another state. Tax on motor vehicles is prorated for the portion of the year it is located in the County unless the vehicle is moved to a non-prorating Virginia locality.

The current tax rate for personal property in Fairfax County is $4.57 for each $100 of assessed value.

Certain motor vehicles are exempt from the car tax.

If you believe that your vehicle has been over-assessed, you can appeal the assessment. Body damage, rusting, and mileage are conditional factors for which adjustments in value are most frequently made.

Ours is $180. I have no problem with funding VDOT since the roads and interchanges being built out my way have helped me shorten my drive time and the amount of gas I use quite a bit.

Considering the amount of driving I had to do 10 years ago, vs. the significantly lower amount of driving I do now because more roads have been built, I think I've actually saved money. Gas ain't cheap and I use a lot less now. Fairfax County Parkway in particular has saved me a huge amount of money, considering I really had to drive out of my way before it was there.

Has everyone gotten theirs? We received one bill for the car my wife owns but so far have not received the one for my car. Just curious if I should wait a little longer or go ahead and call them to get the amount.
