I recently got married to a woman who shares custody with her ex-husband. They have two minor children (14 and 12 years old, respectively) and reside with their dad up in Germantown (MD) during the week and are with us 3 out of every 4 weekends. Does anyone know of any weekend-only activities in Fairfax County, Arlington, or Falls Church for which we can sign them up. Most activities, such as sports, typically involve practice or rehearsal during the week and games or performances, etc. on the weekends. That conventional arrangement won't work in our case. We need to find things for them to do that occur only on weekends. Any recommendations, regardless of the activity, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Try signing them up for lessons (as opposed to a team) in their preferred sport -- or learn a new one -- from the Parks and Recreation in your area. They are frequently on Saturday or Sunday.

I would have to say that this will be tough. Most weekend types of activities are geared towards younger children (theater, fairs, etc). I'm not sure what is out there for young teens. Usually by that age (14 and 12), they are either very much involved in their sports or activities or they are into hanging out with their friends. At least that was my experience when my kids were that age.

My daughter (age 11-14) belonged to a drama club that only met on Saturday afternoons. Of course, during the end of season shows, the practices moved to every night for about 2 weeks and then she had 3 days in a row of performances.

You could *possibly* try to arrange for 1-day-per-week Tae Kwon Do. You don't say what interests these kids have.

Thanks, Christine. I know that the daughter (14 y/o) would like to take guitar and voice lessons, and I've already found some possibilities there. Here 12 y/0 brother would probably enjoy something along the lines of paintball lessons, but I'm having trouble finding anything like that so far.
