Robinson might be big, but Lake Braddock seems bigger as you get inside.

Robinson seems big because of all the land they have.

The Woodson High School property is much larger than Robinson...close to 100 acres. Robinson is about 68 acres and Lake Braddock is 56 acres.

The Robinson building is the largest public building in Fairfax County with over 9 acres under roof. Main hallway is 1100 feet long.

Interesting. Robinson's land seems so much larger, but maybe some of that land isn't part of Robinson?

FCPS reports Robinson as having 78 acres and Woodson 56. Maybe there's other public land adjacent to Woodson that's technically not part of the school site.

Woodson shares the site with Frost Middle, but the County real estate site lists the Woodson property as 97+ acres.

I remember when the site was a dairy farm. We used to go out there and Mom bought dairy stuff from the guy.

I was looking at the acreage for Woodson identified in the latest Capital Improvement Plan, not the county real estate site. But I know it's a big property - wasn't there a big controversy there a few years ago about using some of the land for a bus storage site? I don't know what was ultimately decided, only that people were up in arms about it at the time.

I remember attending school events at Robinson decades ago, while attending an older, smaller high school. It was still relatively new at the time, and it seemed utterly extravagant and enormous to boot.

Ah yes, the bus lot controversy. It started when The County sold the old Eleven Oaks School to the City of Fairfax. The sale was contingent upon the City finding somewhere to park the 50 buses that were parked at Eleven Oaks.

Dozens of sites were considered and rejected...mostly because of land costs or distance. So the City proposed to build the lot on the Woodson property...in the grassy area adjacent to the old farm house (aka Woodson House) at the corner of 236 & Pickett. The neighbors (who wouldn't even be able to see the lot from any of their houses) went nuts. One of their claims was traffic would be much worse with all those buses coming and going. Ultimately, the County backed down. (However they did begin parking about a dozen buses directly in front of the school! LOL.)

Then the City sold the Eleven Oaks property to a developer and the situation became dire. So the City bought a long narrow parcel of land on Pickett Road between the Lifetime Fitness and the tank farm. The tank farm company (Motiva, I think) sold them the land for it. Of course, the townhouse development (Comstock?) behind the tank farm protested vehemently. That was kind of funny considering the hundreds of 18-wheel tanker trucks that already come and go every day! The City was up against the wall...the developer wanted those buses off their land ASAP, so the lot was built despite townhouse owners' objections.

Funny thing is, you can almost see the rejected Woodson site from the new bus lot on Pickett. All the buses still have to use that same 236/Pickett intersection every school day....only difference is the City taxpayers had to cough up several million to buy the tank farm land rather than build the lot on land already owned by the County.

Does this have anything to do with why Pickett Road between Main and Braddock is three non-contiguous sections? So annoying!
