BTW, somebody just asked me if the trails around Lake Anne are wheelchair accessible. I've never really thought it, and didn't know the answer. Has anyone out there tried this? Just taking a wild guess, but I think it might be hard to take the trail around the lake in a wheelchair because of the curved bridge. But that's just a guess.

The W&OD trail from Old Reston Ave west towards at least the FCPkwy is accessible. I don't know how much further in either direction it would remain that way.

That's an interesting possibility. What do you cyclists think? Does the W&OD section near Reston get too heavy with bikes, or would it be safe to have a wheelchair there?

As a frequent W&OD Trail runner I definitely would
not suggest someone in a wheelchair going along it in the congested Reston/Herndon stretch just for a leisurely trip. Some (not all) cyclists in Reston (mostly the "avid" ones wearing tight spandex) are very rude and won't shout out "on your left" when passing runners/walkers at a very high rate of speed from behind.
My colleague was running alone on the trail one day and told me he witnessed a terrible collision between two cyclists because one was traveling too quickly, called out "on your RIGHT" (instead of "on your LEFT"), and the slower moving cyclist must have misunderstood and thought he yelled "
move to the right." I also saw many close calls here. The rude cyclists that dominate Reston/Herndon is one of the reasons why I prefer to drive out to Purcellville whenever possible to go for my runs near the start of the W&OD Trail. The people are MUCH friendlier, the cyclists (for the most part) don't travel at Mach 20 and freak out pedestrians by passing them with mere inches to spare, and the scenery is
gorgeous (even though they've been clear-cutting far too many trees for my taste near Hamilton).

I have been meaning to try them out. I don't mind "crowded" trails. I just get very irked by lots of cyclists who do NOT warn before passing, as you are supposed to do.

You won't have to worry much about cyclists on the trails in South Reston - there are some but most of the traffic are dogs walking their owners.

I agree with Scran, the W&OD would not be fun for a person in a wheelchair. Too many cyclists, and they do get a little aggressive at times, especially if they're riding to work. I think the lake trail would be ok, although this time of year there's bound to be leaves, twigs, and nuts all over the place.

My colleague was running alone on the trail one day and told me he witnessed a terrible collision between two cyclists because one was traveling too quickly, called out "on your RIGHT" (instead of "on your LEFT"), and the slower moving cyclist must have misunderstood and thought he yelled "move to the right." I also saw many close calls here. The rude cyclists that dominate Reston/Herndon is one of the reasons why I prefer to drive out to Purcellville whenever possible to go for my runs near the start of the W&OD Trail. The people are MUCH friendlier, the cyclists (for the most part) don't travel at Mach 20 and freak out pedestrians by passing them with mere inches to spare, and the scenery is gorgeous (even though they've been clear-cutting far too many trees for my taste near Hamilton).
