Why are PJs inappropriate for a trip to the grocery store?
Because they are pajamas meaning they are sleepwear -- meant to be slept-in versus wearing out in public.

I'm surprised that the issue of health and cleanliness hasn't arisen up on the pj-question. Pajamas are worn when sleeping, meaning after taking a bath/shower, a person is clean, puts on clean PJs and sleeps. If one were to wear the PJs outside of the house, one would collect the various dirts, pollutants, etc. (stuff outside of the home) which would then be brough back to the bed.

Well, that's one reason why I don't wear PJs to a store - or anyone else in my family, or frankly, anyone I know personally.

The other reason is that it just looks plain stupid.

Interesting point that has come out of this thread. I used to work with scientists, one most memorably who used to wear the same sweater over and over with holes all over it. The man was brillaint, a double-PhD mathematician and working on formulas on black holes in outer space! I had another friend who became a multi-millionaire in his 30s (IT .com type) who always wore khakis and beat-up sneakers. I know a husband-and-wife team/doctors who never seem to be dressed up very much . . . in fact, the husband is constantly seen in his plaid shirt, beat-up sweatshirts, and trucker hat.

So I suppose I should wear nice clothes to the gym, and change into gym clothes while there, and then shower and change back, instead of just showing up in gym clothes, going home and showering there, because I should look my best all the time???

Come on now. Napolitano better than Janet "the dragon lady" Reno? You get a rep.

That would be making the assumption that one sleeps in the same pj's everynight. If one changes their pj's then one wouldn't bring anything to the bed.

DC is not a fashion capital city like New York or San Francisco. I think any decent woman should spend sometime preparing herself to look presetable then just throwing on anything to go to public places. I don't go out in old t-shirts and sweat pants, so it's not all NOVA women.

Just out of curiosity are you a millenial (born after '81) or a gen x'er ('65-'81)?
