Owners don't generally call mainland numbers back because the market is tight and they may have local people already interested. I know it's not courteous but why spend the money if you don't ave too. Also for what it's worth form my experience almost all management companies advertise on Craig's list...whether you like it or not you would be missing quite a few number of advertised properties. You should also do a reverse look up meaning google property management companies in Honolulu to review their listings.

Visiting many times is one aspect , but after much research on return/residing, the effort to live in Oahu compared to the general expense and negatives, is simply not worth it. If not buying, the lease-rental is
delusional. Obviously many do stay, but many leave as well. Success to them, but the future economics do not look encouraging. Many other options - locations are pretty good and for FAR less, in every way.

As another poster previously pointed out, about a quarter of the people living on Oahu use cellphones with mainland prefixes, so I don't think that alone is the big issue. But if you are calling FROM the mainland you are far less likely to get a call back, because so many of those calls are unproductive. So you have to overcome that perception if you are using a "mainland" number.

IOW, if you are ON the island, and looking for a place, be sure to mention that in your message. It can make a difference.
