The idea is to stay off of the reef. Reef shoes kind of give the wrong impression, like, "I've got the shoes, now I'll go for a walk on the reef'. If you're going out, get to know the area and the break before entering the water.

Just an FYI: We have found that places offering surf lessons also require you to wear a shirt or rash guard.

And if you fall a lot (like myself) you get worn out quicker because you are continually having to get back on your board.

OK I already have the rash guard with short sleeves, against sunburn. Tried it in LA few weeks ago. Probably I will spend a total 2-8 hours with surfing on this vacation, it should not wear out that fast.

So, should I just walk to someone on the Waikiki beach for a lesson, or should I take a bus to the north shore or to some other area and ask someone there? I still don't know which part is good for what.
How long is that bus ride?

This time of year the North Shore is as smooth as a lake. The bus does go to the North Shore, but I have never ridden it up there. FYI: It's 40 miles from Waikiki to Pipeline.

Since you are coming the end of this month, you are better off getting lessons in Waikiki. The South Shore has better surfing waves in the summer, and the North Shore in the Winter.

I recommend walking down to the beach in Waikiki. There are rental places up and down the beach, and several of them have lessons. I personally like the guys at Moku (Surfboard Rental & Surf Lessons at Moku Surf Shop in Waikiki | Moku Surf Shop provides surfboard rental, surf lessons, surf wear and more.). When we first moved here, I rented from them and I see those guys in the water giving lessons all the time. They are right next to a Blazin Steaks location that is a great meal after surfing (grilled steak, rice and a salad). I would not recommend eating at La Cucaracha above them...way overpriced mexican food (I'm pretty sure that stands for "The Cockroach" in spanish).

The rental places right next to and behind the Police Station on the beach across from the Hyatt (near the Duke Statue) have some good instructors as well. BTW - The Duke Statue has a webcam that you can wave to your friends from. There is a 10-12 min time lapse - https://www1.honolulu.gov/multimed/waikiki.asp

Whether taking bus or car - the traffic has gotten so out of hand at Laniakea/Turtle Beach - I got caught up in it this past weekend coming out of Haleiwa - and for the near hour of gridlock I kept saying, there must be an accident - nope, nothing - all clear once past Laniakea - allocate a lot of time for the traffic.

You have to get there before 9am. After that...not so fun.
