Huh?

That makes no sense. California architecture is massively diverse. New neighborhoods here are done by developers.......... and I have no idea where each one calls home.

That is a really odd comment.

It's so amazing how some people are sleepwalking thru life. I guess being wrapped up in the rat race it becomes very difficult for some individuals at times to look around and really see what is going on around them. Now of course greed, commercialism are never to be blamed. To suggest so would be unamerican and unpatriotic. But one has to be sleepwalking to not notice that here on Oahu we have a serious homeless, drug and cost of living problem. Now these issues are pretty new here. So what's to blame? The grass is always greener? The issues we are facing now on Oahu used to be called mainland issues. Is not the grass greener a human condition brought about by not knowing your blessed or have life good?

What does that have to do with the OP?

Am I wrong? Is there three topics going on here? Why Southern Califonians are moving to Oahu?(OPs original question) Do Californians or outsiders change Hawai'i to california when they move here and bringing Ikea and trader Joe's to Oahu? If I'm wrong then sorry? My response was to all the topics .

One topic HBH.

Californians moving to Hawaii?

Specifically, why do S. Californians move to Hawaii per post 1.

Nor do we have an IKEA or Trader Joes by the way.

We may move to Oahu in the next couple of years - husband works for the Dept of Defense and is a contender for a major promotion. He's been offered other jobs there as well - turned them down.

Do SoCal people aspire to move to Hawaii - or is that just OP's observation? Because personally, I have no desire to give up San Diego to live on Oahu. I might be in the minority in that I have actually spent a fair amount of time on Oahu, we are there for several weeks each year and the whole summer ever other year (RimPac).

Good point Bakeneko - I doubt there is much "aspiration" for S California people to move to Hawaii but military and how close it is (and wealth) make it easier logistically.

Look at the houses in older neighborhoods. They are designed for the climate of Hawaii and look very different from mainland houses.
