They should have tilting windows to give the same open area as louvres, light colored roofs, and big overhangs.
Pros of sliding windows are that they are less expensive, easily available and require no (metal) mechanical components to keep them working thus making them more reliable. There is also no wind loads to worry about stressing the hinges and frame of the windows. The cons are that they cut airflow by 40%+ over awning windows. However, while awning windows can "open" (i.e. detach itself from the frame) entirely, the airflow is still restricted to some extent as awning windows do not open perpendicular to the frame. The only "tilting" window that provides the same level of ventilation as jalousies are casement windows but they come with their own set of downsides.

Light colored roofs are extremely unattractive - I would never want a white roof unless it was entirely not visible from anywhere but high up in the sky.

Big overhangs can be beneficial but they are subject to wind uplift forces which could trigger a roof failure in a strong windstorm. The best thing to do is have normal overhangs (30-36") and plant trees around a house. Foliage shading is far more efficient at keeping a house cool than a 5-foot overhang.

I think the OPs question is sort of like asking why some people want chocolate ice cream when they already have vanilla. Some people just like chocolate better. Some people like chocolate and vanilla equally, but just like to vary it up once in a while.

Personally, I love San Diego. I've daydreamed about living in Hawaii. I like the balmy weather, the warmer water. I like the slower pace, and I think it would be neat to learn about and experience a different culture. Also, as someone else mentioned, I am used to a high cost of living.

All that said, if it weren't for the military moving my family, I doubt I would ever go through with it. If I had a ton of money I could see owning a retirement home there to spend a couple of months a year. Maybe it's a bit of wanderlust, but I think variety is nice.

"Hawaii" doesn't have the properties you are thinking of. Some parts of Hawaii do, but most of Oahu is urbanized and just as fast paced. The only thing slow is the movement of traffic

Probably to be surrounded by people of Asian descent. While the weather might be similar, the populations and food are very different.

People move to Hawai'i from California today for the same reasons that people moved to the islands from the Marquesas way back when. They didn't want to stay where they were.
